The Private Eye - looking closely and thinking by analogy with jeweler's loupes and inquiry method for hands-on interdisciplinary science, art, writing, math, and more

Train-the-Trainers

Ann Bettis, Certified Private Eye Trainer, shares her story:

"As I reflect on my experiences with The Private Eye, I am able to give countless examples of “a-ha” moments that I have seen in students.  There really is no tangible measure for the exceptional ed student who exudes confidence in the exquisite work he has generated, or the average student who perhaps for the first time feels miles above average, or even the gifted student who discovers a hidden talent, or a new avenue for expression.  I am certain that every educator has had junctures of enlightenment with their students through The Private Eye.  Junctures that are both uplifting and affirming.

The most radical transformation I’ve witnessed, however, is the one that began in me the moment I stepped foot in The Private Eye workshop several years ago.  I confess, I was not thrilled to be out of the classroom for two days (preparing for a sub, juggling transportation for my two children etc).  Much to my chagrin, I was captivated and curious upon arrival.  My engagement level soared as I was the “who” that finally was heard, or the blind melon bumblebee, who finds those like her.

Through the convex lens of the loupe, I find an explosive fireworks display of new worlds.  Patterns, Fibonacci everywhere, scientific details, adaptations, a volcanic eruption of analogies, connections with fellow educators (after analogy 5 of course!), kindred enthusiasm, new found confidence.

I bring this back to the classroom with the elation of a frantic mother who has found her lost car keys!  New life is breathing into our learning.  We are Lucy, and the wardrobe door has been opened.  Genius is emerging from ALL LEARNERS.  The golden ticket inside every educator’s candy bar is that the alignments and course of study (standards) connections are numerous, easily over 50%.

Just as the loupe alters the way in which we look at things, The Private  Eye experience changes the way we look at ourselves, others and the world around us.

Learning is revolutionized!"
